Azithromycin is an antibiotic(抗细菌药) useful for the treatment of a number of bacterial infections(病原细菌).[1] This includes middle ear infections(中耳炎), strep throat(链球菌性咽炎), pneumonia(肺炎), traveler’s diarrhea(旅行者腹瀉), and certain other intestinal infections(腸胃炎). May also be used for a number of sexually transmitted infections(性感染疾病) including chlamydia and gonorrhea infections(淋病). Along with other medications may also be used for malaria(疟疾). Can be taken by mouth or intravenously(靜脈注射) with doses once per day.[1]

Common side effects include nausea(恶心), vomiting(呕吐), diarrhea(腹瀉) and upset stomach. An allergic reaction or a type of diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile(偽膜性結腸炎) is possible. No harm has been found with use during pregnancy.[1] Its safety during breastfeeding(母乳餵養) is unclear but likely okay.[2] Azithromycin is an azalide, a type of macrolide(大環內酯) antibiotic. It works by decreasing the making of protein which stops bacteria growth.[1]
